Module 13: 3D modelling

Notes for offline study · 3 November 2026

Solid editing: shell, slice and fillet edge

Key points

  • SHELL hollows a solid to a set wall thickness.
  • SLICE cuts a solid along a plane, keeping one or both sides.
  • FILLETEDGE rounds the edges of a 3D solid by a chosen radius.

Surface and mesh modelling

Key points

  • Surfaces model thin, freeform shapes that solids handle poorly.
  • Mesh objects can be smoothed and creased for organic forms.
  • Surfaces and meshes can be converted to solids for further editing.

UCS in 3D

Key points

  • The UCS sets where X, Y and Z point when you draw in 3D.
  • Align the UCS to a face so new geometry sits on that face.
  • Save named UCSs to return quickly to working planes you use often.

Generating 2D drawings from 3D models (VIEWBASE)

Key points

  • VIEWBASE creates a base view of a 3D model in a layout.
  • Projected, section and detail views come from the base view.
  • Drawing views update when the 3D model changes.
