Short answer

A word of honesty first

Social media is full of "earn lakhs from home" freelancing promises. I'm not going to make any. Freelancing works for people who have a skill clients will pay for, and who treat it like a small business: delivering on time, communicating clearly, keeping records. That's what this guide is about.

Step 1: Pick one skill

Choose something you can deliver this month, not after a year of study.

SkillTypical first gigsLearn free on YUNOVA
Excel / data entryCleaning lists, simple reportsexcel, typing-data-entry
Canva / graphic designSocial posts, flyers, menuscanva, graphic-design

Tally / bookkeepingMonthly entries for small shopstally

One skill, done well, beats five listed on a profile.

Step 2: Make samples

No client yet? Make the work anyway.

  • Designer: 5 posts for an imaginary café.
  • Excel: clean a messy public dataset and make a dashboard.
  • Writer: 3 blog posts in your chosen niche.
  • Editor: re-edit a free stock video into a 30-second reel.

Label them honestly as practice or sample work.

Step 3: A simple portfolio

A Google Drive folder, a Behance page or a one-page site is enough. Include:

  • What you do, in one line
  • 3–5 best samples
  • How to contact you
  • Your city and languages (local clients like knowing this)

Step 4: Find the first clients

Start close to home:

  • Local shops, tutors, clinics, gyms. Many need posts, menus or simple bookkeeping.
  • Friends' and family businesses (charge them, even a small amount; it builds the habit).
  • LinkedIn posts showing your samples.

Online platforms:

  • Global and Indian freelance marketplaces exist. Read each one's fee and payment rules before you sign up.
  • Write proposals that mention the client's actual problem, not a copy-paste template.

Step 5: Price and agreement

  • Price per task to start ("₹X for 10 posts"), not per hour.
  • Write the scope: what's included, number of revisions, deadline.
  • Ask for part payment in advance for new clients.
  • Share final files after payment, or share watermarked previews first.

Safety: never pay a "registration fee" to get work. Never share OTPs or bank passwords. Job and task scams are common. If you're cheated, report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

Step 6: Money, records and tax (basics)

  • Keep a simple sheet: client, work, amount, date received.
  • Freelance income is taxable income. You report it in your ITR; depending on your situation, it may be taxed under business/profession income. Rules on presumptive taxation and the right ITR form depend on your case. Check incometax.gov.in or ask a CA.
  • GST: registration becomes mandatory above notified turnover thresholds, and some situations (like certain export or inter-state supplies) have their own rules. Check gst.gov.in or a CA before you assume either way.

Basics of filing: belated ITR filing guide.

Your first 30 days

WeekGoal

Mistakes that kill freelance careers early

  1. Saying yes to everything, then missing deadlines.
  2. No written scope, so endless revisions.
  3. Underpricing so much you burn out.
  4. Disappearing mid-project. One honest delay message saves the client relationship.
