How I Started Understanding SEO as a Beginner in Digital Marketing

When I started learning digital marketing, I didn't know much about what happened behind a Google search. Learning about crawling, indexing and ranking changed the way I look at search results and helped me understand why SEO matters.

When I first started learning digital marketing, I honestly thought it was mostly about creating social media posts, writing captions and promoting products online. I didn't really pay much attention to what happened behind a Google search. I would simply type something, click on one of the first few results and move on.

That started changing when I began learning about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

One of the first things I learned was that getting a website to appear on Google isn't as simple as just publishing something online. There is a process behind it, and understanding that process made me look at search results a little differently.

In my SEO class, we discussed three important terms: crawling, indexing and ranking.

Initially, these words sounded quite technical to me. But once I understood what they meant, things became much easier.

Crawling is when search engines discover and explore webpages. Indexing is when they organise and store information from those pages. Ranking is what determines the order in which relevant pages appear when someone searches for something.

Another interesting thing I learned was the difference between organic search results and paid advertisements. Earlier, I never really thought about why certain websites appeared at the top of Google. Now, I find myself noticing which results are advertisements and which ones have earned their position through organic search.

What I find interesting about SEO is that it connects useful content with people who are actually looking for it. A website might have beautifully written content, but if people cannot find it, that content may not reach the audience it deserves.

I'm still at the beginning of my digital marketing journey, and there is a lot more I need to learn. I don't expect to understand everything overnight. For now, I'm trying to focus on understanding the basics and seeing how these concepts work in real life.

One thing I can say is that I no longer look at Google search results the same way I used to. And honestly, that's a pretty interesting change for someone who has only recently started learning about digital marketing.
