Short answer

Why I recommend Python as a first language

When I was putting together YUNOVA's coding skills, Python kept coming up as the easiest first step for people who've never coded. The syntax reads almost like English. You can see a result in your first ten minutes. And it's used in data analysis, automation, web backends and AI, so what you learn isn't wasted when you pick a direction.

Stage 0: Setup (one evening)

  1. Download Python 3 from python.org/downloads. On Windows, tick "Add Python to PATH" during install. Bahut log yahi miss karte hain.
  2. Install VS Code and its Python extension.
  3. Open a terminal and type python --version. If you see a version number, you're ready.

No laptop? You can start on browser-based notebooks like Google Colab, but a laptop helps once projects get bigger.

Stage 1: Basics

TopicWhat to practise
print, variables, inputA program that asks your name and greets you
Data typesint, float, str, bool. Try type() on each
if / elif / elseGrade calculator: 75+ A, 50+ B, else C
Loops (for, while)Print a multiplication table
ListsStore 5 marks, find total and average
DictionariesPhone book: name → number
Functionsdef gst(amount, rate): return tax

Ek rule: har topic ke baad 3 chhote programs khud likhiye, bina video dekhe. Atak jaayein to docs ya AI se poochiye "ye error kyun aaya", "fix kar do" nahi.

Stage 2: Thoda aage

  • String methods: .upper(), .split(), .replace()
  • Files: read and write a .txt and a .csv
  • Errors: try / except, reading tracebacks
  • Modules: import random, import datetime
  • pip: install a library (pip install requests)

Stage 3: Five small projects

These are boring on purpose. Boring projects teach the most.

  1. Expense tracker – add expenses, save to CSV, show monthly total.
  2. Quiz game – 10 questions from a dictionary, score at the end.
  3. Password generator – using random.
  4. File renamer – rename all photos in a folder with a date prefix.
  5. Marks report – read a CSV of students, print toppers and averages.

Put each on GitHub with a short README. That's your first portfolio.

Stage 4: Pick a direction

DirectionLearn nextGood for
Data analysispandas, matplotlib, SQL, JupyterAnalyst, MIS roles
Web developmentFlask or Django, HTML basics, databasesBackend developer
Automationopenpyxl (Excel), requests, schedulingOffice automation, ops roles
AI / ML (later)NumPy, scikit-learn, statisticsAfter data basics

If you're unsure, I'd pick data analysis. Excel + SQL + Python is a combination employers understand. Here's the full path: how to become a data analyst in India.

A realistic daily routine

TimeTask
15 minWatch or read one concept
30 minWrite code for it yourself
10 minFix your errors
5 minWrite one line in a notebook: what I learned

Missing a day is fine. Missing a week is where most people quit.

Mistakes I see beginners make

  1. Tutorial hopping. Five courses, zero projects.
  2. Copy-paste coding. If you can't write it again tomorrow, you didn't learn it.
  3. Fear of errors. Errors are normal. Read the last line of the traceback first.
  4. Starting with AI/ML. Basics first, or ML will feel like magic you can't debug.

FAQ

Python seekhne mein kitna time lagta hai?

Basics with daily practice usually take a few weeks. Job-level skill in one direction takes longer and depends on your projects.

Kya maths strong hona zaroori hai?

Basics ke liye nahi. Data science aur ML ke liye statistics zaroori hoti hai.

Python ya Java, pehle kaunsi?

For most beginners, Python. A full comparison is coming in our Python vs Java post.

Kya Python Hindi mein free seekh sakte hain?

Haan. YUNOVA par Python skill free hai, Hindi aur English lessons ke saath.
