Short answer

A good fresher resume is one page, single column, plain fonts, saved as PDF, with these sections in order: Name and contact → Summary (2 lines) → Skills → Projects/Internships → Education → Certifications → Achievements. Use the same keywords as the job post, start bullet points with action verbs, and add numbers only if they are real. Avoid photos, tables, icons and graphics if you apply through job portals, because many applicant tracking systems (ATS) read plain text best.

Most fresher resumes have the same problem: lots of words, very little proof. Here's a format that fixes that.

What is ATS, and why freshers should care

Many companies use software to collect and filter applications. It reads your resume as text and looks for relevant keywords. Fancy two-column templates, text inside images or skill "bars" can be read wrongly. A clean layout is safer for both software and humans.

The fresher resume structure

1. Header

  • Full name (large)
  • Phone, professional email, city
  • LinkedIn and portfolio/GitHub links (if any)
  • Skip: date of birth, father's name, religion, full address, photo (unless the employer asks)

2. Summary (2 lines)

"B.Com graduate skilled in Tally Prime, GST basics and Excel (XLOOKUP, pivot tables). Looking for an accounts assistant role where I can handle day-to-day bookkeeping accurately."

Change this line for every job type.

3. Skills

Group them:

  • Tools: Excel, Tally Prime, Canva
  • Skills: GST invoicing, data cleaning, social media scheduling
  • Languages: English, Hindi

Only list what you can demonstrate in a test.

4. Projects / internships (your "experience")

Format: What you did + tool + result.

  • "Built a sales dashboard in Excel with pivot tables and slicers for a local store's 3-month data."
  • "Managed Instagram posting for a college fest; created 20 posts in Canva."
  • "Recorded daily accounts for a family shop in Tally Prime for 6 months, including GST invoices."

5. Education

Degree, college, year, and marks only if they help. Latest first.

6. Certifications

Name, platform, year, and a verification link if available.

7. Achievements / activities (optional)

NSS, sports, competitions, volunteering: one line each.

Action verbs that work

Instead ofUse
Responsible forManaged, handled
Helped inSupported, assisted with (then say what)
DidBuilt, created, prepared, analysed
Worked onDesigned, organised, recorded

Example: before and after

Before: "Worked on Excel project. Good knowledge of computers."

After: "Cleaned and analysed 1,000+ rows of survey data in Excel using TRIM, COUNTIFS and pivot tables; presented findings to the class."

(Use your real numbers. If you don't know the count, describe the task without a number.)

Formatting checklist

  • [ ] One page
  • [ ] Font: Calibri, Arial or similar, 10.5–12 pt
  • [ ] Single column, clear headings
  • [ ] Same date format everywhere
  • [ ] No spelling mistakes (read aloud once)
  • [ ] File name: Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf
  • [ ] Keywords from the job post included honestly

Common fresher mistakes

  1. "Objective: to work in a reputed company..." Generic. Use a specific summary.
  2. Listing every software you have opened. Interviewers test what you list.
  3. No projects. College projects, self-made practice files and volunteer work all count.
  4. Personal details overload.
  5. One resume for all jobs. Tweak skills and summary for each role.
  6. Fake experience or certificates. Background checks and practical tests catch this.

No experience at all? Build proof in 2 weeks

  • Make one practical project for your target role (an Excel report, a Tally dummy company, a set of social posts, a small Python script).
  • Earn a verifiable certificate that requires a test.
  • Put the project on Google Drive or GitHub and add the link.

After the resume: interview prep

Your resume decides what they ask. Prepare to explain every line. Common questions are here: interview questions for freshers.

FAQ

Should a fresher resume be one page?

Yes, in almost all cases.

Should I add a photo?

Not unless the employer asks. Many portals and ATS don't need it.

Word or PDF?

PDF, unless the job post asks for Word.

Can I use Canva resume templates?

For direct email to a small business, a clean Canva design is fine. For job portals, a simple single-column layout is safer for ATS.

Should I write my percentage?

If it is good or required by the employer, yes. Otherwise degree and year are enough.
