In 1986 a fire destroyed the Goenka family's cotton business in Bengaluru. The one thing saved was a computer. Bharat Goenka, then in his twenties, used it to write an accounting program for his father, and that program became Tally, the software that most small businesses in India run their books on. His story is about building a tool so simple that the shopkeeper, not the programmer, is in charge.
A fire, a computer and a father's problem
Bharat Goenka was born in 1955 in Kolkata into a Marwari business family. His father, Shyam Sunder Goenka, ran a cotton business that moved to Bengaluru. Moneycontrol tells the story of what happened next: a devastating fire laid waste to the business, and the only thing salvaged from the wreckage was a computer on the shop floor.
Shyam Sunder Goenka wanted a simpler way to keep accounts. Tally's own history says the company began in 1986 when Bharat Goenka, guided by his father's vision of simplifying business operations, wrote an MS-DOS program called Peutronics Financial Accountant. It was built for a businessman, not an accountant.
This was 1986, six years after Infosys was founded in the same city. While the big IT companies wrote software for clients abroad, Goenka was writing for the Indian shop and the Indian ledger.
“Goenka is often referred to as the 'father of the Indian software product industry' as he was amongst the first to develop products for the Indian market using just a personal computer three decades ago.”
— Sharad Sharma, NASSCOM product forum chairman, via The New Indian Express
Codeless accounting
The early versions of the product set the pattern. Tally's timeline records Tally 3.0 as pioneering code-less accounting, meaning a user could record a transaction in ordinary accounting terms without learning account codes first. Later releases added multi-currency support, inventory, VAT compliance and, as Tally.ERP 9 and then TallyPrime, a full business management system.
The company was renamed Tally Solutions in 1999. Its reach is now enormous: Tally says it has worked with millions of businesses in more than a hundred countries through a network of more than 28,000 partners, and its education arm has trained over 800,000 learners.
The reason, according to Moneycontrol, is attention to detail. Tally does not fuss about date formats, old entries can be edited easily, and the software is designed so that a simple graduate can run it. The name has become a generic word for accounting software in India, and chartered accountants, distributors and trainers who know it form a network that newer products find hard to match.
Recognition
In November 2011 NASSCOM, the software industry body, gave Goenka its first Lifetime Achievement Award. Presenting it, the chairman of its product forum said that Goenka was often called the father of the Indian software product industry, because he was among the first to build products for the Indian market using nothing more than a personal computer.
In 2020 the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on him for his contribution to trade and industry. Dataquest noted that he received it alongside Sanjeev Bikhchandani, the founder of Naukri.com.
Tally remains a family company. Sheela Goenka chairs it, Bharat Goenka is vice chairman, and his son Tejas, who joined in 2011, runs day-to-day operations and led the launch of TallyPrime. In 2018-19 the company reported revenue of about Rs 500 crore.
The skills and habits that made the difference
The first was starting with a real user. The first customer was his own father, and every feature was judged by whether a trader could use it without calling for help. Moneycontrol quotes the current managing director saying a small-business owner in a distant town should not have to phone someone to operate the software.
The second was respect for accounting itself. Tally works because it follows the rules of double-entry bookkeeping exactly; the software only hides the codes, not the logic. A learner who understands debits and credits understands why Tally does what it does.
The third was patience. The product went from a DOS program to a national standard over more than three decades of steady releases, each one fixing something real, from currencies to VAT to GST.
What you can learn from Bharat Goenkaइस कहानी से आप क्या सीख सकते हैं
- Learn the accounting before the softwareTally is double-entry bookkeeping with the codes hidden. Learn what a ledger, a voucher and a trial balance are, and every Tally screen will make sense.
- Build for a real personGoenka's first user was his father. When you practise, keep a real small business in mind, with its bills, stock and tax returns, instead of typing sample entries.
- Simple is harder than complexCode-less accounting took real design effort. When you can explain a feature to a shopkeeper in one sentence, you have understood it.
- Keep up with the rulesTally changed with VAT and then GST. Accounting rules change too, so learning how to update your knowledge matters as much as the first course.
- Make tools for the people around youTally began as help for one family business. Offer to keep the accounts of a relative's shop or a local club in Tally; it is the best practice you will find.
