Indra Nooyi grew up in Madras, studied science at Madras Christian College and then took a management degree at IIM Calcutta. She began as a product manager in India, went to Yale for a second master's degree, and spent years in consulting and corporate strategy. In 2006 she became chief executive of PepsiCo, one of the world's largest food and drink companies, and led it for twelve years.
Science in Madras, management in Calcutta
Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi was born in Madras, now Chennai, on 28 October 1955, the second of three children. She went to Holy Angels school and then to Madras Christian College, where she earned a science degree in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
Her next step was the one CAT aspirants know well. She joined the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta for its postgraduate programme in management, finishing in 1976.
Her first jobs were in India, as a product manager at Johnson & Johnson and at the textile firm Mettur Beardsell. Then she applied to the Yale School of Management in the United States and earned a master's degree in public and private management in 1980.
Strategy, step by step
Her career after Yale was built in strategy. According to her publisher's profile, she spent six years at the Boston Consulting Group directing international strategy projects for clients ranging from textiles and consumer goods to retail and chemicals.
From 1986 to 1990 she worked at Motorola, rising to vice president and director of corporate strategy and planning. Then she spent four years as senior vice president of strategy and strategic marketing at Asea Brown Boveri, the Zurich-based industrial company.
In 1994 she joined PepsiCo as senior vice president for strategic planning. She moved up to corporate strategy and development, and in 2001 became president and chief financial officer, joining the board the same year. In those roles she was responsible for finance, strategy, procurement, investor relations and information technology.
Chief executive of PepsiCo
In 2006 she became PepsiCo's chief executive, one of very few women running a large American company at the time. She served until 2018 and remained chairman until early 2019, after twenty-four years with the company.
Forbes summarises her record: she fought off a bid to break the company up, nearly doubled its sales, and introduced healthier products and more environmentally friendly practices. She and the management professor Vijay Govindarajan later described in the Harvard Business Review how PepsiCo tried to deliver strong financial results while meeting the needs of all its stakeholders, not only shareholders.
Her influence reached beyond the company. Her publisher's profile lists her on the boards of the US-India Business Council and the US-China Business Council, on the foundation board of the World Economic Forum, and as a member of the US-India CEO Forum. Forbes notes that in 2016 she became one of the largest alumni donors to the Yale School of Management, the school that had admitted her as a young woman from Madras.
After PepsiCo she joined the board of Amazon in 2019. In 2021 she published a memoir, My Life in Full: Work, Family, and Our Future, which became a New York Times bestseller and argues that society must do far more to help people combine work and family.
The skills and habits that made the difference
The first was a strong analytical base. Physics, chemistry and maths, then a management degree, gave her the habit of working through a problem with numbers before forming an opinion. Strategy and finance, the two roles that carried her to the top, both depend on that habit.
The second was patience in building a career. She spent nearly twenty years in product management, consulting and strategy before she joined PepsiCo, and twelve more there before she became chief executive. Every role added a skill the next one needed.
The third was honesty about the cost. In an interview quoted by Forbes, she spoke of the tradeoffs and sacrifices behind her success. Her memoir turns that experience into a case for better support for working families.
