SSC CGL Typing Test (DEST): Speed Needed and How to Practise

Short answer

SSC की CGL instructions के अनुसार Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) में लगभग 2000 key depressions का passage 15 मिनट में type करना होता है। इसे अक्सर 8000 key depressions per hour कहा जाता है। यह test qualifying है: पास होना ज़रूरी है, पर इसके अलग से marks merit में नहीं जुड़ते। Speed के साथ accuracy भी उतनी ही ज़रूरी है।

Exact rules, which posts need DEST, and error limits are given in each year's SSC CGL notice. Read the current notice on ssc.gov.in before your test. I checked the 2000/15-minute format against SSC's own instruction document.

What "key depressions" means

Every key you press counts: letters, spaces, Shift, punctuation. A capital letter is two key depressions (Shift + letter).

My advice: aim for comfortably more than the minimum, with very few errors. On the test day, nerves and an unfamiliar keyboard will cost you some speed.

Format basics

• On-screen passage in English. You type it in the given window.
• 15 minutes.
• Candidates for different posts may have different skill tests (DEST or CPT). Check your post in the notice.
• Some categories of candidates with disabilities get exemptions or extra time per SSC rules.

Four-week practice plan

Week 1: Touch typing foundation

• Learn finger positions on the home row: ASDF JKL;.
• Don't look at the keyboard. Cover your hands with a cloth if you must.
• 30 minutes daily on letter drills. Speed will drop at first. That's normal.

Week 2: Words and accuracy

• Common English words, short sentences.
• Target: 95%+ accuracy before you push speed.
• Use Backspace less. Learn to type it right the first time.

Week 3: Passages and timing

• Type full paragraphs from newspapers or government reports for 15 minutes at a stretch.
• Count key depressions (most typing software shows KDPH or WPM).
• Note your common mistakes: maybe it's always "the" → "teh" or missed spaces.

Week 4: Test simulation

• Daily 15-minute mock in SSC-style software or a typing site with a test mode.
• Practise on an unfamiliar keyboard at least twice (cyber café or a friend's).
• Last 3 days: lighter practice, good sleep.

Accuracy habits that matter

1. Sit right. Feet flat, screen at eye level, wrists not resting hard.
2. Rhythm over bursts. Steady keystrokes beat fast-then-stuck.
3. Eyes on the passage, not the keyboard or your typed text.
4. Don't panic over one mistake. Keep going; don't spend 20 seconds fixing one word.

Test-day tips

• Check the keyboard and chair before you start; tell the invigilator if a key is faulty.
• Read the instructions on screen fully.
• Start at a steady pace. You'll speed up after the first minute.
