- Small words change strength: 'I'm slightly concerned' is much softer than 'I'm very concerned.'
- Move the stress to change the focus: 'I sent it to HIM' answers a different question from 'I SENT it to him.'
- 'Could' and 'would' make a request gentler than 'can' and 'will'.
- Choose the level of strength on purpose, because the same facts can sound harsh or mild.
